Similar To Twitter, Reddit Is Testing Allowing Users To Set Any NFT As Their Profile Picture

Reddit is testing a feature that will allow users to use any NFT they own as their profile picture, not just the Ethereum-based “CryptoSnoos” that was released in limited quantities last year. Twitter recently launched a similar feature that allows users to set their NFTs as profile pictures, with the photos providing information about the NFT when clicked and appearing as hexagon-shaped images to distinguish them from the standard Twitter profile pic. However, the specifics of Reddit’s support for NFTs have yet to be determined.

Reddit explained to TechCrunch that this particular NFT test is still in its early stages and hasn’t been made available to the general public on the site.

“We’re always exploring ways to provide value for users and communities on Reddit. At the moment we’re testing the ability to use NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and verify ownership,” said Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt. “It’s a small, internal test and no decisions have been made about expanding or rolling out the capability.”

For a long time, Reddit has been experimenting with various NFT-related initiatives, even creating a dedicated page for NFT-related activities at For the time being, the page is primarily focused on Reddit’s own digital collectibles, the CryptoSnoos.

The “Snoo” part of the name refers to Reddit’s alien mascot, aka “Snoo,” and the collectibles themselves are variations on Snoo’s image. One depicts the mascot as a blocky image, while another depicts it as a helium balloon. Only four CryptoSnoos have been released so far.

CryptoSnoos elicited a wide range of responses. In the comments section of the announcement post, many Redditors were angry about Reddit’s expansion into NFTs, which they called “idiotic,” “a gimmick,” or worse. Others were more concerned about the high cost of NFTs, which prevented many people from participating in the ecosystem. Some, on the other hand, had expressed neutral curiosity or even support for Reddit’s efforts.

These reactions reflect the polarized response to NFTs across industries. Someone has already created a tool to block Twitter accounts that use NFT profile pictures. Following widespread user backlash, both Discord and Mozilla put their crypto projects on hold. As traditional game publishers attempted to transition to crypto, gaming communities have devolved into chaos.

Reddit says it doesn’t have any concrete plans to launch more CryptoSnoos because they were only a test.
